A good electrical design can help create excellent usability

In the ever-evolving landscape of home design and functionality, one aspect that often goes overlooked but plays a crucial role in our daily lives is the humble electric socket outlet.

If you're considering updating your homes wiring system and adding more plug sockets, you've come to the right place. In this article, I'll explore the key considerations that can help you make informed decisions while balancing functionality and cost-effectiveness.

The Positioning of Electrical Outlets

So often my customers air their frustrations of not enough power points or outlets that are just in the most useless place. So lets get thinking about the ways we can eliminate this waste.

The way you will use the socket holds the key, as some positions are easier to decide than others. For example: a socket beside the bed is a very easy choice, whilst the lounge room could prove trickier.

We need to account for trailing leads, ease of access if it will be used frequently, and its height in relation to any furniture you put in the way. There is no point putting in a socket then having it be behind a wardrobe or concealed by the sofa.

Placing sockets near a door may cause an obstruction once something is plugged in, so think what it will be used for.

For a cost effective installation, the best strategy will be to minimise the amount of sockets you install whilst still installing enough to support modern living.

Opting to have more socket outlets will increase the costs of everything: the amount of wiring, the number of accessories, and the larger repair bills from the installation.

Will You Still Use That Electrical Point In The Future?

Its important to know what you will be using the socket for. More outlets add flexibility to your home life, but they also add cost and can be difficult to remove once installed.

Nowadays there are so many more battery operated hoovers that the socket on the hall or landing is now somewhat obsolete. Mostly these sockets are now used for a night-light or a lamp, but they have little use for anything else and instead sit there unused.

A common request is to have more sockets installed behind a TV. There's no wonder, the typical house will, on average, plug in 4 devices by the TV at any one time, and with space often being limited, extension leads can add a lot of mess.

Unsure about what the future will hold?
There are two great ways to get inspiration and hopefully get an idea of where your headed:
1.    Make a list of what you like about a living space and why.
This will help you identify what you want and where. Once we know that, we can install your electrical system in-line with this vision.
2.    Live in the space for at least 6 months, but 1 year ideally.
Once you have been in the home for a while, you will start to understand how you use the space as we’re all different. If there is something that is causing particular pain, then write it down as a problem to be solved. Finding a lot of use in a particular thing? Write that down too. It will help with identifying where to point when the electrician asks.

Finish Colour

Choosing the finish of the accessory will be entirely personal preference. For me, I have come to like the simplicity of the white plastic ones. I use the money I save from not using a metal fixture to allow the use a comparatively expensive white socket, which is still more affordable than metal ones – these sockets are fantastic; electrically speaking.

Some interior designs call for a socket to match, and that’s fine. The only difference is superficial.

So why the wild price differences? The differences are massive, and they are mostly down to the build quality.

There are three main things I see as an electrician that consumers could benefit from knowing:

The ease of use

Premium socket outlets are often more user-friendly, including easily operable switches, smooth plug insertion and removal, and a feeling of quality that comes from the sturdy assembly. Pricier outlets will generally ensure a hassle-free experience every time you use them

Life expectancy

Premium socket outlets are engineered for a longer life expectancy, offering a more reliable electrical connection that can endure years of usage, reducing the need for frequent replacements and providing peace of mind for the long-term safety and functionality of your electrical outlet and the appliance you plug into them.

Reliability

Premium socket outlets are known for their exceptional reliability, as they undergo rigorous testing and quality control measures during manufacturing, guaranteeing consistent and dependable electrical connections in your home, ultimately reducing the risk of electrical issues or interruptions.

Key takeaway:
In your quest to create a home that perfectly meets your electrical needs, remember that good socket outlet design when paired with a good layout can make a world of difference. By considering factors such as positioning, future use, and the finish, you can strike the right balance between functionality, form, and cost-effectiveness.
